Technology is the intellectual knowledge and the physical systems to solve issues, perform tasks, and create new methods to obtain desired outcomes. Civilization’s advancement correlate to the developments of technology. Three characteristics of technology discussed in the chapter are dynamics, reach, and self-sustaining nature The characteristic of dynamics relate to how the constant change in technology requires significant changes in the society’s political, religious, and economic structures. The characteristic of reach relates to technology’s influence on societies around the world. The characteristic of self-sustaining nature refers to how technology helps with the development of civilizations (p. 352-353).
A desired quality of life depends on harnessing and adapting to technological changes. For example, the cell phone have alter the way people around the world communicate with one another. Technology has also lead to new job opportunities, which in turn lead to improvement in the global economy. Technology can change industry, such as IBM’s creation of the supercomputer. While technology has lead to overall improvement in the world especially in developing countries, it has also lead to rise of ethical, legal, and social concerns. These concerns are caused by the fact that underprivileged civilizations cannot afford the latest technology. On the other hand, some privileged civilizations fail to share technology or to provide methods to disseminate technology. This created imbalance not only between developed and developing nations but between the rich and the poor in these nations (354-56).
